Every year on March 17, people from all backgrounds celebrate St. Patrick’s Day: the anniversary of the death of Saint Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland. For this occasion, the Chicago River is dyed bright green, by shaking an orange powder into the river. The recipe? That has been top secret for over 50 years. This learning activity zooms in on this particular phenomenon. Students learn about St. Patrick’s Day and immerse themselves in a special day they would like to know more about. Finally, they put their newly acquired knowledge into practice by writing an essay about their special day.
