Op het Amerikaanse dollarbiljet, 'the greenback', staat een afbeelding van een beroemd persoon. Maar waarom zijn dit alleen mannen? In dit artikel worden vrouwen genomineerd voor op het dollarbiljet.

De leerlingen lezen een artikel over beroemde Amerikaanse vrouwen die een plaats verdienen op het dollarbiljet. Naar aanleiding van het artikel beantwoorden de leerlingen vragen, vooral gericht op woordkennis. Daarnaast schrijven ze zelf een korte tekst waarin ze een vrouw nomineren. In een extra C1-opdracht kun je ze laten discussiëren over de ondertegenwoordiging van vrouwen in topposities binnen politiek of bij grote bedrijven.

Geef de leerlingen een schrijfopdracht n.a.v. de website. De leerlingen nomineren een vrouw, en noemen argumenten waarom juist deze vrouw op het biljet moet komen.

Who do you think should be the woman to be printed on the greenback? Write a short article in which you nominate the woman of your choice. Make sure you clearly specify your reasons for nominating this particular woman. You can choose one of the women who are mentioned in the article, but you can als nominate a woman who is not on this list. Use the internet to find information for your article.

Form (mixed!) groups of four and discuss the issue of underrepresentation of women with high positions in many areas of public life.

Do this using one or more of the following statements as a starting point. Before starting the discussion you might want to jot down a few arguments that support the position you intend to defend.

• The present situation is the natural consequence of the fact that women differ from men and has very little, if anything, to do with discrimination.

• The only way to achieve equal representation is by positive discrimination.

• Society would be more humane if there were more women at the top.

• Appointments for top position should always be based on merit rather than gender.
